Now in its eleventh year the CHG Program has already provided over $1 million in grant funding to assist in preserving locally-held nationally significant documentary heritage collections. Many community organisations such as historical societies, public libraries and Indigenous and migrant community groups have already benefited from the Program which offers up to $8000 in support of preservation projects. As part of their grant successful recipients are also invited to Canberra to participate in intensive preservation workshops at the National Library.
Previous beneficiaries have included the Cooloola Shire Library Service, the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society, the Royal Hobart Hospital Nurses Association, the Jarndu Yawuru Aboriginal Corporation, the Maritime Museum of Tasmania, and the Estonian Archives in Australia.
Projects funded have included preservation surveys; re-housing of collection items in archival storage containers; reformatting through microfilming or digitising; conservation treatment and environmental control. Documentary heritage items which have benefited through the Program included business records, journals, letters, photographs, drawings, maps, sound recordings and films.
Community groups and organisations which hold a nationally significant collection of documentary material, and require financial assistance to conduct preservation activities, are encouraged to apply. Applications close on Wednesday 30 June.
In 2004 the Community Heritage Grants Program is funded by the Australian Government through the National Library of Australia; the Department of Communications, Information Technology and the Arts; the Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs; the National Archives of Australia; and the Australian Film Commission.
