To celebrate the fact that the new online Gateways can reproduce images in glorious colour, we have selected some of Wolfgang Sievers’ colour work. The National Library purchased Sievers’ photographic archive, which documents Australian industry and architecture, last year.

Thousands of photographs from the Sievers’ archive are now being digitised for the Catalogue, in a project that will last at least two years. Working alphabetically through the many well-known Australian companies that commissioned Sievers, we found these wonderful images taken for Balm Paints. Many of the photographs in the Sievers’ archive exist only in negative or transparency format, and are relatively unknown to the photographic historians and many others who admire his work.

More of Sievers’ Balm Paints photographs can be seen in the Catalogue by typing in the search terms ‘Sievers Balm’. Keep an eye out for more discoveries as the project moves into the companies beginning with C!
