New contributors to PictureAustralia
Over the past few months, PictureAustralia has continued to grow with 36 institutions now contributing images to the service. The number of contributing institutions has more than doubled over the past year.
Collections from State Records of New South Wales, the National Portrait Gallery and the Australian National University are recent additions. These three collections portray diverse aspects of Australia and Australian life, from portraits of famous Australians to photographs of Australia’s industrial and business heritage. There are historic images of New South Wales depicting the construction of the Harbour Bridge and Sydney city, as well as images of rural towns.

The National
Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery aims to increase the understanding of the
Australian people—their identity, history, creativity and culture—through portraiture.
Its collections feature portraits of the people who have shaped our nation.
Works range across time, from figures in colonial history such as Governor and
Lady Grey and Bungaree, to the Aboriginal Cricket team of 1886 (Australia's
first touring side), to contemporary icons such as Deborah Mailman, Ian Thorpe,
Peter Garrett, Peter Doherty and Justice Michael Kirby. The collection also
includes images across a variety of media—paintings, photographs, sculpture,
cartoons, drawings and ceramics. A selection of 224 images are digitised and
available on PictureAustralia.
Australian
National University
Selected image collections from the ANU’s DSpace repository have been added
to PictureAustralia, including significant photographs from the Noel Butlin
Archives and the University Archives collections. The Noel Butlin Archives houses
one of the largest collections of business and trade union records in Australia.
There are also images of the history of the ANU campus in Canberra. Currently
the ANU has 326 images available on PictureAustralia.
State Records
of New South Wales
State Records of New South Wales includes many tens of thousands of photographic
images, from the late nineteenth century to the present, in its collection.
These images capture life in the state in much of it richness and diversity—from
the beaches of Sydney to the rural areas of the country. The photographs have
been created by, or on behalf of, New South Wales Government agencies in support
of their official business, and than transferred to State Records for permanent
retention as state archives. The State Records facility is gradually digitising
its image collections and will be regularly adding more to the PictureAustralia
service. There are over 1600 images from State Records currently on PictureAustralia.
