Asia Week
In early February 2004 the Library welcomed over 120 postgraduates, honours students and researchers studying Asia during the Australian National University’s Asia–Pacific Week. As part of their program, the researchers—from Australia, the countries of Asia and as far afield as Finland and Germany—spent half a day learning about the Library’s extensive Asian collections and the support provided to researchers of Asia both in Canberra and elsewhere. While the Library’s key contemporary collecting strengths are for China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Indonesia, it also holds a number of unique and valuable formed collections, such as the Coedes Collection on Indochina, the Braga Collection on the Portuguese in Asia, and the Williams Collection on foreign settlement in Japan. These proved to be of considerable interest to the visiting researchers. Seminars, tours, demonstrations of databases and printed readers’ guides
were provided by the Asian Collections staff. |
