National Film and Video Lending Service Moves to ScreenSound Australia

In 1946 the National Library began developing and operating a film (and subsequently video) lending collection. When the Australian film and sound collections were transferred from the Library to the National Film and Sound Archive in 1984, the lending collection was not considered part of the archival collection and remained with the Library.

In 1997, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image in Melbourne began managing the collection on behalf of the Library. Since then, the Library has reviewed its strategic directions and the development of the film and video collection is no longer viewed as a collecting priority. The National Library is pleased that the collection has now been accepted by the Australian Film Commission, which has assigned responsibility for the future development of the collection and management of the lending service to ScreenSound Australia: The National Screen and Sound Archive. A major component of the collection is a Screen Studies collection of approximately 9000 overseas titles.

The transfer of the collection and the operation of the lending service took place in the first week of July. All users of the service have been informed of the new borrowing arrangements. Further information about the service can be obtained from Ms Kate McLoughlin, Manager, Transition Team, National Film and Video Lending Service, ScreenSound Australia, at Kate.mcl@screensound.gov.au or 02 62482049.
