A recent addition to the Library’s collection of dance images documents performances by some of Western Australia’s best known companies and independent artists. Taken by Perth-based photographer, Jon Green, these photographs capture the colour and movement that makes dance such an alluring art form. They have particular significance for the Library’s dance collections, which to date have not been strong in material from the west of the country.

Some images, such as one of West Australian Ballet dancer Callum Hastie, capture the athleticism of dance. Similarly, a shot of Melissa Aurisch, also of the West Australian Ballet, makes us admire the dancers’ physical skills. Others, including that of independent dancer Olivia Millard, embody ideas of balance and asymmetry. Still others, such as that of Benazir Hussain, reflect the colour and rhythm of dance.

Jon Green developed his passion for photographing the performing arts while employed as a house photographer at Edith Cowan University. Over the past eight years he has worked with a variety of performing arts companies and organisations including the West Australian Ballet, Buzz Dance Theatre, Deck Chair Theatre Company, Black Swan Theatre Company and the Perth International Arts Festival. He is currently working on his first book.

The portfolio can now be seen by keying ‘Jon Green’ into the search box on the Catalogue.
