National Library Selects OCLC PICA to Underpin Kinetica
The National Library of Australia has announced the selection of OCLC PICA’s Central Library System (CBS) software as the product to support the bibliographic system which underpins Kinetica.
The software will be implemented over the next year and will be operational from December 2005. CBS is an automated library system designed by OCLC PICA, based in The Netherlands.
Jan Fullerton, National Library Director-General said, ‘OCLC PICA’s software best meets the National Library's future needs. Our aim is to provide Australians with fast and convenient access to the collections of the nation’s libraries.’
The implementation of CBS will mean that Australian libraries can effectively contribute their records to the shared database, the Australian National Bibliographic Database (NBD). The National Library expects CBS to meet the growing expectations of Library clients for many years.
A significant benefit of the OCLC PICA system is the ability to search and contribute records in a wide range of scripts including Chinese, Japanese and Korean. It will also provide high quality performance for all users with improved features for contributing records.
The purchase and implementation of the new library management system is part of the Kinetica redevelopment. December 2004 sees the launch of the new search component of Kinetica, which has been built by National Library staff using TeraText, an Australian software tool.
