One of the recommendations to come from the Visual Arts Forum at the National Library on 7 May this year was that the Library should investigate the provision of access to the SCIPIO database through KineticaWeb. From September, SCIPIO has been available through KineticaWeb and is being offered at the standard search fee.

SCIPIO, from the Research Libraries Group (RLG), is a unique database containing bibliographic records for art and rare book sale catalogues dating from the late-sixteenth century to the present. It is the only online union database of auction catalogue records in existence. SCIPIO contains records for auction sales catalogues from all major North American and European auction houses and significant private sales.

Records include date and place of sale information, catalogue title, auction house, sellers and institutional holdings. The RLG website <http://www.rlg.org> provides more information about SCIPIO including the complete list of indexes, subject coverage, a sample record and a list of current contributors.

Providing access to the unique information in SCIPIO will be of enormous value to arts libraries, museums, galleries and other libraries with visual arts collections.
