The Document Supply Service of the National Library plays an important role in the production of the Australian Public Affairs Information Service (APAIS) and Australian Medical Index (AMI) service databases. The full text articles that appear in the Australian Public Affairs Full Text (APAFT) and Meditext are photocopied by Document Supply Service staff members. The indexed journals are photocopied using the latest digital photocopiers to ensure the best copy is supplied in a timely manner, usually within 24 hours. These copies are then scanned and matched to the index record in the databases.

APAIS is a subject index to scholarly articles in the social sciences and humanities published in Australia. This index has been compiled by the National Library since 1945 with online coverage commencing from 1978. The APAFT service includes both the index and the full text articles and covers journals published since 1995. Approximately 12 000 new articles are indexed annually. This online database is available via subscription as part of the Informit Online services from RMIT Publishing at: <http://www.rmitpublishing.com.au/>.

AMI is a subject index to Australian health and medical literature, which also contains abstracts to indexed articles and covers such topics as Aboriginal health, aged care, AIDS/HIV, drugs and psychiatry.

AMI is available online via the Internet as part of the Informit Online service from RMIT Publishing. Meditext database contains not only the index and AMI citation records, but also links to scanned images of articles from around 100 Australian medical journals. The index covers article citations published from 1968 and full text coverage from 1995.

All articles indexed in APAIS and AMI are held by the National Library. Individuals and researchers can order copies through the National Library’s Copies Direct service, an option available through the catalogue, while libraries can send requests to the Library’s Document Supply Service in the usual manner via the Kinetica Document Delivery System, email, Ariel, fax and mail.
