What’s in a Name?
The Role of Authorities in the Twenty-first Century

Registrations are now open for the ‘What’s in a Name?’ seminar to be held from 10 am to 5 pm on 31 January 2005 at the Dockside Convention Centre, Darling Park, Sydney. This seminar is being organised by the Australian Committee on Cataloguing as a professional development event for Australian cataloguers and metadata creators.

The seminar will provide an overview of Australian and international projects which aim to develop new services and add value using authority data. The seminar will feature a keynote address on the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) project by Dr Ed O’Neill, Consulting Research Scientist, OCLC Online Computer Library Center. Dr O’Neill will also present a session on the FAST (Faceted Application of Subject Terminology) project. Gavan McCarthy, Director, Australian Science and Technology Heritage Centre, will discuss Archival Authorities and Open Network Information Infrastructure. Ann Huthwaite from Queensland University of Technology will discuss AACR3 and Authorities. The seminar will also include a session on the National Library of Australia’s People Portal project.

Registration fees are only $155 (ALIA members) and $195 (non-members), including morning and afternoon teas and lunch. The seminar is being held on the day prior to the commencement of the Information Online Conference, so if you are travelling to Sydney for the conference please consider coming a little earlier to attend the ‘What’s in a Name?’ seminar.
