Pictures Collection: Aerial Photographs by Richard Woldendorp The National Library recently acquired a collection of aerial photographs by eminent Western Australian photographer Richard Woldendorp. Woldendorp is renowned for his aerial images, many of which have been published. The Library’s acquisition includes some of his most famous photographs, such as Aerial View of Strzelecki Desert, April 2004; Barrier Reef, off Gladstone, Queensland, 1996, and the iconic image Where the Great Australian Bight and the Nullabor Plain Meet, Western Australia, 1985.
In addition to the landscape photographs, Woldendorp’s aerial view of a housing development on James Cook Island, Sylvania Waters, 1996, was acquired to document the development of residential marinas. The photograph records aspects of the built environment and the affluence of the residents—the houses are large, taking up the entire block, every home has a swimming pool, and many of the residents have a boat moored in the adjoining marina. Born in the Netherlands in 1927, Woldendorp migrated to Western Australia in 1951. He purchased his first camera in 1955, becoming a professional photographer in 1961 after winning two prizes in the Craven-A national photography competition. Woldendorp was made a Fellow of the Australian Institute of Professional Photography in 1991, and an Honorary Life Member in 1997. |
