Report on the Kinetica Document Delivery Service

The Expert Advisory Group on Document Delivery was formed in late 2003 on the recommendation of the Kinetica Advisory Committee, to review the business model for the Kinetica Document Delivery Service (KDD) and investigate areas for development of the service. Over the past five years, the Australian interlending environment has been marked by an overall reduction in interlending, development of local consortia, increased utilisation of commercial supply services and increasing automation of local interlending systems.

In March, the Expert Advisory Group on Kinetica Document Delivery released its Final Report which considers future directions for the KDD servicewithin the changing interlibrary lending environment. The Group found that KDD is considered to be a major and highly effective means of requesting items and copies from other libraries. KDD provides access to the National Bibliographic Database (NBD) providing key infrastructure for resource sharing and discovery in Australia.

The Group’s Final Report examines trends in interlibrary loans, evaluates the KDD service and identifies avenues for improvement of the service including:

  • Providing access to a range of commercial suppliers through KDD
  • Continuation of interoperability testing between KDD and other ISO ILL compliant systems in order to facilitate the work of libraries setting up their own systems
  • Exploring options for a simple KDD interface to encourage increased membership and use of KDD, particularly by small libraries
  • Continuing to encourage libraries to add their holdings to the NBD and keep holdings information up to date
  • Investigating the introduction of a web-based delivery service for member libraries, and ultimately for individuals
  • Working with the library community to review issues for KDD to support systems which offer end user requesting
  • Marketing the benefits of the KDD payments service and reciprocal requesting using the KDD service
