Monash University Archives Becomes a Contributor to PictureAustralia

The 15 000 images the Monash University Archives hold cover all aspects of Monash—its history, students, staff and buildings. The images include black and white prints, colour prints, slides, negatives and digital images. More than 6000 of these images can be found on MONPIX, the Archives’ online image database, which has recently joined PictureAustralia.

The archives collection includes early photographs of the Clayton campus site and its buildings. There are also photographs related to the history of the Chisholm Institute of Technology, Frankston Teachers’ College, Gippsland Institute of Advanced Education and the Victorian College of Pharmacy, all of which have merged with Monash.

A considerable part of the collection documents student life at Monash, ranging from academic pursuits to student protests. Numerous student sporting and recreation clubs including archery, gymnastics, fencing, rowing, athletics and cricket are also represented.

Those interested in the history of the performing arts in Melbourne can view photographs and posters of productions held at the Alexander Theatre from the 1960s to the mid-1990s. Productions include Othello, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, Peter Pan, Educating Rita, Rumplestiltskin, Alice in Wonderland and The Sleeping Beauty. Featured actors include Julia Blake, Miranda Otto, Lorraine Bayly, John Diedrich and John Wood.

The highlight of the Archives’ image collection is the Sir John Monash collection. All of the photographs from this collection will feature in PictureAustralia. The Archives’ online exhibition details Sir John Monash’s life as soldier, engineer and public figure. The Archives also holds memorabilia including letters, paintings and medals, all of which are featured in the online exhibition.
