Each year the national librarians (or their representatives) of the national libraries of Asia and Oceania meet to discuss common issues and to share information about new projects and initiatives in the region. On 24 May this year, the thirteenth meeting of the Conference of Directors of National Libraries of Asia and Oceania (CDNLAO) was hosted by the National Library of Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur. Dr Haji Wan Ali Bin Wan Mamat, the newly appointed Director-General of the National Library of Malaysia, chaired the meeting which was attended by representatives from 15 CDNLAO member countries, including Australia. The conference provided attendees with the opportunity to brief each other on recent developments in their respective national libraries. Most attendees reported an increased focus on digitisation programs, with an increasing demand for online services, and access to information in digital form. The group also discussed collaboration amongst libraries, museums, galleries and archives in preparation for the National Libraries Section session at IFLA in Oslo in August.
Mr M.S.U. Amarasiri, Director-General of the National Library of Sri Lanka and Mr Supriyanto, Executive Secretary, National Library of Indonesia, reported on the library situation in their countries following the tsunami of December 2004. All member countries extended their condolences to the affected countries.
CDNLAO was held to coincide with a Workshop on Leadership Development for Directors of National Libraries in Developing Countries sponsored by the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme. The workshop was held at the National Library of Malaysia from 25–26 May and was attended by 13 countries, including representatives from South Africa, Sudan, Mynamar, Bhutan, Laos and Cambodia.
