An update on the progress of the Kinetica Redevelopment Project was the focus for this year’s Kinetica Annual Users’ Meeting, held at Perth on 22 September.
The meeting, attended by 200 delegates, was opened by The Hon Sheila McHale MLA, Minister for Community Development, Culture and the Arts and Women's Interests. Margaret Allen, CEO and State Librarian at the State Library of Western Australia chaired the meeting.
Project team leaders described the new features and functionality of Libraries Australia Search, followed by an overview and demonstration of the new Cataloguing Client. A session about the release and implementation for Stage 2 of the Kinetica Redevelopment Project, due at the end of the year, was also of great interest.
The 2006 launch of a free Libraries Australia interface was announced by Jan Fullerton, Director-General of the National Library of Australia. This interface will provide all Australians access to the wealth of information available through the Australian National Bibliographic Database.
Parallel sessions in the afternoon provided an opportunity for reference staff to learn more about alerts, personalisation, effective use of limits in Libraries Australia and the benefits of opening up access to library clients. Cataloguers were given the chance to have a closer look at the new Libraries Australia Cataloguing Client and interlibrary lending staff were updated with information on ISO interoperability, including presentations from several members of WAGUL (the Western Australian Group of University Librarians). All parallel sessions offered delegates the opportunity to ask questions.
Feedback received from the meeting was very positive, with 95 per cent of delegates rating the overall meeting as above average or excellent and 93 per cent rating the meeting content above average or excellent.
The day concluded with tango music, canapés and Libraries Australia frisbees as the sun set on a warm spring evening on the banks of the Swan River in Perth.
We extend our sincere thanks to our Western Australian User Group colleagues for their valuable assistance in planning the meeting.
PowerPoint slideshows and audio files of the presentations are available on the Kinetica website at: <http://www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/aum/aum05/aum05agenda.htm>. A selection of photos of delegates and presenters can be found at: <http://www.nla.gov.au/kinetica/aum/aum05/KAUMPhotos.html>.
