The Library’s New Map Curator
The National Library of Australia is pleased to announce that Dr Martin Woods has taken over the position of Map Curator, following the retirement of Maura O’Connor.
Martin began his career in cultural heritage management in South Australia, and in 2000 he was awarded a PhD in History on the study of voluntary community service and civil society.
Martin has a long association with the Library, starting with his 1997 editing of Australia’s Oral History Collections : A National Directory. This project was a major achievement that was later launched by the Library as a website. He has also worked extensively with the Library’s Oral History, Manuscripts and other special materials collections.
More recently, Martin was Assistant Manager, Collection Services at the Australian War Memorial, where he developed the Memorial’s collection search system and military encyclopaedia.
Martin returned to the National Library in 2004 as manager responsible for the reading rooms and access services. In his new position as Map Curator he is, amongst other things, developing a geospatial search interface for the Library’s Australian map collections.
