The free Libraries Australia service was launched on Thursday 7 September at the Cradle Coast campus of the University of Tasmania in Burnie.

Almost 60 people attended the launch, including local librarians, staff from the State Library of Tasmania, local government officials and members of the community. Professor Michael Bennett, Head of Faculty, History and Classics, University of Tasmania, launched the service with an entertaining and lively historical foray into the world of libraries, literature and books up to the present time. Professor Bennett’s speech will soon be available on the University of Tasmania's library website.

The regional launches have provided an opportunity to promote the Libraries Australia service to those living and working in rural and remote areas. University Librarian Linda Luther stressed the importance of the service, particularly to the students in north-western Tasmania; and a demonstration of the service illustrated the ease by which these students could search for and request resources from the University Library in Hobart to be delivered to the Cradle Coast campus.

Libraries Australia enables users to easily find and access more than 42 million items from Australia’s libraries. Visit http://librariesaustralia.nla.gov.au.
