The National Library is calling for applications for the 2008 Community Heritage Grants.

Grants of up to $15 000 are available to community groups around Australia to help preserve and manage locally held, cultural heritage collections of national significance for future generations.

Since 1994 almost $2.5 million has funded 591 projects, including preservation needs assessments; significance assessments; re-housing of collection items in archival storage; reformatting through microfilming or digitisation; conservation treatment; environmental control and training workshops.

In 2007, successful funding recipients included a diverse range of organisations such as the Friends of John Flynn Place and Cloncurry Shire Council; the Australian Multicultural Foundation; the Upper Murray Historical Society; the Australian Country Music Foundation; the Performing Arts Collection of SA; the Museum of Chinese Australian History; the Norfolk Island Museum; and the Western Desert Lands Aboriginal Corporation. A full list of previous CHG recipients is available on our website (www.nla.gov.au/chg).

Community groups and organisations which hold a nationally significant collection and require financial assistance to conduct preservation activities are encouraged to apply. Applications close on Monday 30 June.

For further information, or to obtain a copy of the 2008 guidelines and application form, visit the CHG website or contact the Coordinator on (02) 6262 1147 or chg@nla.gov.au.
