5959 of the Library's Manuscript Collection comprises the illustrated
manuscripts and diaries of Donald Friend, running from 1931 through to
1988, and documenting his personal life alongside broader issues of
Australian social and artistic culture. Two National Library
publications celebrate this material: the recently published The Genius
of Donald Friend: Drawings from the Diaries 1942-1989 (Selected and
Introduced by Lou Klepac--see inside story, p. 3); and an imminent
multi-volume publication of extracts from the diaries, edited by Dr
Anna Gray-the first volume of which is scheduled to appear towards the
end of this year.
