Pages reproduced from The Four Gospels of the Lord Jesus Christ According to the Authorized Version of King James I with Decorations by Eric Gill (Waltham Saint Lawrence, Berkshire: Golden Cockerel Press, 1931)

The National Library of Australia has many Bibles in its Collection, including fragments from the first editions printed in English in the sixteenth century. The King James Authorised Version, commissioned by James I of England during 1604-1611, became the most popular Bible amongst English-speaking people. It soon became part of everyday life and was taken across the globe in the wake of British Imperial expansion. This 1931 edition is illustrated by Eric Gill (1882-1940), the English sculptor, engraver and rypographer (he created Gill Sans and Perpetua rypefaces). He is best known for his vivid and inventive wood engravings of religious subjects.
