Rites
was a collaboration between the Australian Ballet and Bangarra Dance
Theatre and was commissioned from choreographer Stephen Page for the
1997 Melbourne International Festival of the Arts. It was danced to
Stravinsky’s monumental score The Rite of Spring and was Page’s
choreographic examination of the natural forces that determine
Australia’s ancient landscape. Jim McFarlane’s photo is a promotional
study for the work symbolising the historic partnership between
Australia’s indigenous dance company, Bangarra, and its flagship ballet
company, the Australian Ballet.
