When
the artist Donald Friend died in 1989, he left behind over 40 volumes
of his diary, now held in the National Library of Australia. Friend
lived a peripatetic life in Nigeria, Sri Lanka, Australia and Bali and
his diaries speak of art, love, friendship and travel. The diaries
showcase his skill as both draughtsman and writer. They are being
published by the National Library as a major ongoing project, with
volume 2 shortly to become available. This is one of 10 recently
acquired photographs which document Donald Friend’s life in Bali.
