At a recent meeting, the Friends Committee made a decision which the Chairman, Russell Doust, described as ‘a further step towards ensuring that the Friends of the National Library of Australia continues to make a significant material contribution to the Library’. Since 2001, the Friends have contributed $35 000 towards the establishment of the Library’s proposed Treasures Gallery. The Friends have now widened their scope for assistance by deciding that, in 2003 at least, a significant sum of money will be directed to the Library’s Acquisition Trust Fund. This will enable the Library to acquire one or more important items which will be specifically designated as the gift of the Friends. It is hoped that this initial gift will be shown to members at the Annual General Meeting in December. §§§
Are you willing to serve on the Friends Committee and actively participate in the conduct of a range of Friends’ activities in support of the National Library? Nominations are being sought for the 12 elected members of the Friends Management Committee. If needed, a ballot for these positions will be held at the 2003 Annual General Meeting of the Friends of the National Library of Australia Inc., to be held at 6 pm on Tuesday, 9 December in the National Library Theatre. To nominate, you will need to fill in a nomination form, available from the Friends’ Office (see contact details on this page). This form must include the consent of the nominee, and the names of the nominator and seconder. All three must be financial members of the Friends. The Executive Officer must receive the nomination form no later than 5 pm on Friday, 7 November 2003. The Director-General of the National Library, Jan Fullerton, is a member ex officio, and the Director-General nominates two Library staff members, and appoints the Executive Officer who attends all meetings of the Committee. The Chair, Deputy Chair and Treasurer are elected by the Committee at the first Committee meeting following the AGM. So if you think you have the necessary time, energy and commitment to serve on the Committee, send in your nominations. §§§ This year’s Celebration is set to be the event of the year. The Friends will be celebrating none other than the world-renowned playwright, David Williamson. The associated book is well on its way towards being completed, and the Celebration Event, to be held in the Library Theatre at 2 pm on Sunday, 23 November, is shaping up to be spectacular as well. Next month I will let you know which celebrities of Australian theatre will be speaking at the function, so do come along for this once in a lifetime opportunity to meet David Williamson, have afternoon tea with him and his colleagues and get all your old editions of his works signed.
