Eric
Smith has been five times winner of the Blake Prize for religious art
(1956,1958, 1959, 1962 andl969); he won the Wynne Prize for landscape
painting in 1972 and 1974, the Archibald Prize for portraiture in 1981
and 1982 and the Sulman Prize in 2003. In this work, Smith has painted
a direct and assured portrait of his friend, Australian author and
journalist, Richard Hall (1937-2003). During the late 1960s to
mid-1970s, Hall worked for Gough Whitlam as his private secretary and
for Gordon Bryant and Kep Enderby as ministerial assistant. The Library
holds some of Hall’s papers and an interview with him was conducted in
1991 for the Oral History and Folklore Collection.
