Close to 100 Friends attended the Annual General Meeting and the Christmas party on 9 December last year. Retiring Chairman of the Friends Committee, Russell Doust, conducted his final  meeting; his leadership, friendship and expertise will be missed. Having elected the Committee for 2004, the members adjourned to the Library podium for a balmy evening of wine and jazz.

The committee for 2004 has achieved a full complement of 12 elected positions, the maximum allowable, and it contains some familiar faces as well as some new ones. The first meeting of the committee was held on 16 December, and our office bearers were elected. Jenny Gleeson became Chair of the Friends for 2004. Jenny is a former National Library staff member and has been a member of the Friends since the organisation began. Margaret Nichols, another former staff member, was elected as her deputy and will also edit the Friends Newsletter. John Chapman returns as treasurer. Others who are serving on the committee in 2004 include Rita Bishop, a retired practice manager; Warwick Bradney, Yvonne Cramer and Ian Dudgeon, all former chairpersons of the Friends Committee; Claudia Hyles, a third-year committee member; Michael McGirr, a writer, publisher and editor; historian Margaret Park; Richard Stone, former senior librarian at the Library; and John Thomson, whose career as a librarian spans nearly 40 years. As a consequence of these new and returning members, the 2004 committee possesses an exceptionally strong balance of experience of both the Library and of the Friends Committee. In addition, the National Library representatives on the committee this year are Director-General Jan Fullerton and Assistant Directors General Helen Kon and Jasmine Cameron.

Our first event for 2004 occurs on Sunday 29 February at 2pm in the National Library theatre and foyer. ‘Living Traditions’ is a concert celebrating Verandah Music, a unique anthology of traditional Australian music edited by Graham Seal and Rob Willis. Verandah Music showcases for the first time the wealth and diversity of the roots of traditional Australian music. The anthology includes stories, interviews, photographs and two music CDs mastered by the National Library. Join us on Sunday for a remarkable concert celebrating the launch of the publication. Performers on the afternoon will include Eileen McCoy, Cornelus Brandenburg, Touchwood, Us Not Them and Maysie Tucker. Refreshments in the foyer of the Library will follow the concert.
