Chu Chin Chow, a musical based on the tale of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves, opened in London in August 1916. Written by Australian-born Oscar Asche and Frederic Norton, its 2235 performances remained a record for nearly 40 years. It can possibly claim to be the earliest Australian musical to play on the international stage, and was followed by many other successes, including a surprising number not seen in Australia itself (see article on page 17).
