Australian
Landscapes II is one of a series of four machine-embroidered panels,
'Australian Landscapes I-IV', by the English textile-artist Alice
Kettle. They were given to the Library by former Director-General
Warren Horton in memory of his wife Patsy Hardy, a friend and regular
user of the Library. The panels took 18 months to create and Kettle
estimates she used five million stitches in the process. A rich mixture
of gold, ochres, reds and blues, the panels represent a commentary on
the relationship between the Library and its readers, and people and
the landscape. Kettle claimed her inspiration was drawn from time spent
'watching the people in the Reading Room; listening to the sounds of
Australia in the oral archive; holding original works of art in the
Pictures Collection; and walking among the many miles of books in the
stacks'.
