Last month I mentioned that the Friends of the National Library of Australia is holding its annual Celebration event on Sunday 14 November, this year honouring the author Frank Moorhouse. Previously the achievements of Alec Bolton, Geoffrey Serle, Katharine Brisbane, Ruth Park, Rosemary Dobson, David Malouf, Michael Leunig, Tim Winton, Mem Fox and David Williamson have been celebrated. Frank Moorhouse
began his writing career with the Sydney Daily Telegraph as a cadet
journalist and later worked on several country newspapers. In 1963 he
became the editor of The Australian Worker which led to his involvement
as a union organiser for the Workers Education Association and the Australian
Journalists Association. He has received many awards during his career,
starting in 1964 with the Banjo Paterson Short Story Competition, for
Walking Out. In 1985 Frank Moorhouse was made a member of the Order
of Australia and continued his writing career with further award-winning
short stories and novels. In 2001 he won the Miles Franklin Award for
his novel, Dark The Celebration

Catharine Lumby and Professor Bruce Bennett AO. Catharine Lumby, a widely
