Welcome, new Friends and old, to the New Year. I hope that everyone has been enjoying the festive season. On Sunday 14 November the Friends of the National Library of Australia celebrated the achievements of Frank Moorhouse. The Friends Celebration is an annual event to honour the work of any person who has contributed significantly to the creation of books and literary culture in Professor Bruce Bennett and Associate Professor Catharine Lumby both contributed essays to the book Frank Moorhouse: A Celebration published by the National Library of Australia, and both were present on the day. Professor Bennett delivered an engaging speech about Frank and his life, and launched the Celebration publication. Apart from the essays, the book also includes excerpts from works by Frank and passages from an oral history interview conducted by Hazel de Berg in 1974. At the conclusion of the launch, Frank entertained the audience with anecdotes from his career as a journalist and writer and answered questions from captivated listeners. Guests then moved to the foyer where they had the opportunity to talk to Frank and ask further questions while their books were signed. Members who did not attend on the day should by now have received their complimentary copy of the book through the mail. If for any reason you missed out, please contact the Friends Office. The National Library’s latest exhibition In a New Light: Australian Photography 1930s – 2000 opened in December. The Friends are holding a special eventon Tuesday 8 February with Helen Ennis, the curator of the exhibition. Helen will be conducting a walk and talk through the exhibition and will provide some fascinating insights into the photographic works on display.
