MARCH FRIENDS

In 1983, the Council of the National Library of Australia established the National Library Fellowship. The first fellows commenced their research at the Library in 1984. In 1985, the fellowships were renamed in honour of Sir Harold White CBE (1905–92), the first National Librarian. This year, the National Library is holding a conference to mark the twenty-first anniversary of the Harold White Fellowship scheme. The Harold White Fellowships aim to promote the National Library of Australia as a centre of scholarly activity and research, to encourage scholarly and literary use of the Library’s collections, and the production of publications based on this work, and to publicise the Library’s collections.

The conference An Open Book: Research, Imagination and the Pursuit of Knowledge will be held from Friday 29 April to Sunday 1 May. Join outstanding Australian authors, researchers and international guests such as Professor Geoffrey Bolton, Dr Ann Moyal, Frank Moorhouse, Henry Reynolds, Ian Hancock and Bridget Griffen-Foley. They will explore the value of the National Collection as a resource and inspiration for writing. Themes to be discussed include: the environment, history, politics, the role of the imagination, cultural diversity and biography. For payment and program details, see the Autumn 2005 Program of Events, or go to <www.nla.gov.au/events/openbook/>, or phone (02) 6262 1122. Bookings are essential.

Coming up in April we have Harry Laing and Nicola Bowery taking Friends on a cook’s tour of some of the remarkable flavours of poetry. Nicola and Harry are poetry gourmands, as well as being spirited and enthusiastic readers. They are both published poets and are passionate about bringing poetry to a wider audience. Together they live beside Monga Forest, Braidwood, and run weekend and longer workshops under the banner ‘Poetry Alive—Why wait for your funeral?’ Harry also undertakes writing workshops in schools and colleges, and was the writer on the Regeneration Project, funded by the Bushfire Recovery Fund, at Birrigai, in 2003. Join Nicola and Harry to relish the taste of poems from all over the world, including some lesser-known works by Australians, as well as fine poetic food from Hungary, Estonia, Brazil and Russia. For details please see Calendar of Events.
