Old Parliament House, as we now know it, was opened by the Duke of York on 9 May 1927. A large crowd gathered on the dusty Limestone Plains to witness the grand opening of what was to be the key building of the federal capital. Among the guests present were the widows of three former prime ministers—Lady Barton, Mrs Deakin and Dame Reid. Their papers, held in the National Library’s Manuscript Collection, provide a detailed account of the events of that day.
