This
expressive watercolour is one of the 30 executed by an unknown artist
for the London Missionary Society. Many of them are copies after prints
by two artists, William Ellis and John Webber, who sailed with James
Cook. The purpose of the collection is unclear, but possibly it was
used to help illustrate the role of the mission in the Pacific. This
watrcolour is one of the items to appear in the exhibition Cook’s
Sites, which opens 16 march. See story p. 3.
