The correspondence between David Campbell (1915–1975) and Douglas Stewart (1913–1985) is one of the great literary treasures held by the National Library. Documenting over 30 years of friendship, the letters contain a stimulating exchange of opinions on literature and the art of writing, fellow authors, fishing, nature and the land. For the reader, the correspondence is a window onto the nature and experience of creativity and the role of friendship in sustaining its expression. A selection of the letters has recently been published as Letters Lifted into Poetry, edited and introduced by Jonathan Persse (2006).
