The ephemeral nature of a staged performance—transient and imprinted only on the minds of the performers and audience—makes such cultural milestones difficult to record. In an attempt to preserve the extraordinary achievement of the staging of Wagner's Ring cycle by the State Opera of South australia in late 2004, the National Library’s collection now includes some of the costumes designs and production photographs stemming from that event. John Thomson’s article in this issue details the unique and complex challenges involved in staging a production of this magnitude.
