This pastel of Marilyn Bognor by Enid Dickson is one of her many portraits of dancers from the Borovansky Ballet that are held by the National Library. The Borovansky Ballet was founded in 1939 in Melbourne by Edouard Borovansky. Borovansky had been a dancer with Colonel de Basil’s Ballets Russes and this was reflected in his choice of ballets for the Borovansky Ballet during the 1940s. The company’s repertoire also included works choreographed by Borovansky himself, including The Outlaw, and by other company members. The Borovansky Ballet performed for Australian audiences for over two decades, adding international classic ballets to its repertoire during the 1950s, until 1961 when it was supplanted by the Australian Ballet.
