The papers of Patrick White (1912–1920), recently acquired by the National Library of Australia, consist of original manuscripts, correspondence, photographs and memorabilia (MS9982). Originally believed to have been destroyed (see story), this personal archive ranges from notebooks containing ideas and observations to recipes, annotated speeches and objects such as the author’s much-loved beret. Importantly, the archive also contains the research for and beginnings of all White’s novels as well as drafts of unpublished novels, a novella, several plays and correspondence with figures of historical and contemporary significance. The National Library is delighted to be able to preserve this remarkable collection, a priceless treasure, for the nation.
