In July 2007, the National Library acquired a rare copy of the 1550 edition of the Coverdale Bible, the first complete Bible printed in English. Myles Coverdale (1488–1569), bishop of Exeter from 1551–1553, produced the first edition in 1535. The Coverdale Bible is printed in what was known as ‘black letter English’ or ‘German Gothic’, a highly decorative script popular in Western Europe in the twelfth century. Decorated initial capitals are used throughout its pages and a beautiful woodcut depicts the creation of Eve. Read the full article
