This postcard of actress Nellie Stewart is one of over 1000 postcards of theatrical identities of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries compiled by David Elliott. His collection covers a wide range of performers and genres within the performing arts including opera, vaudeville, drama, Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, melodramas, popular plays of the era, comedy, a midget circus and a brass band. It also provides a history of costume, dress styles and hairstyles of the period. Theatrical postcards were a popular way of corresponding in the nineteenth century.
