This evocation of the Sirens from classical Greek legend is contained in an album of artwork by George Gordon McCrae (father of poet, Hugh McCrae), a painter, poet and public servant who maintained a lifelong love of the sea. His album of drawings (1839–1903) features an array of ships, historical figures and events, book cover designs and illustrations, and observed scenes from Australian life. In addition to his artwork, McCrae wrote a novel and published a number of books of verse, including three verse narratives. Read story
