On the cover:
This splendid illumination is one of the rare works from the Library’s exhibition Handwritten: Ten Centuries of Manuscript Treasures from Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin. It is from a prayer book commissioned by Nicolas von Firmian (d. 1510), a Tyrolean nobleman whose family had close links to the court of the Habsburg Holy Roman Emperor. The page appears opposite the beginning of the Little Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary and depicts the Annunciation, when an angel tells Mary that she will bear the Son of God. Read about this and other fascinating items from the exhibition.
