EXQUISITELY COLOURED, THIS WIND MAP BY Dutch cartographer Johannes Janssonius is a striking image of a compass rose with 32 cardinal points surrounded by wind heads representing various races of mankind, as well as the four seasons. It appeared in Atlantis Majoris Quinta Pars, Orbem Maritimum (Atlas of the Whole World, Part Five: ‘Water World’), the publication of which was a major step in the dissemination of the Dutch mapping of the East to a broader public. Janssonius’ Wind Map is just one of the items featured in the Library’s major exhibition Mapping Our World: Terra Incognita to Australia. Discover more about the maps, atlases, globes and scientific instruments in the exhibition on page 2.
