George Frederick Gregory’s watercolour rendition of the steamship, SS City of Adelaide, is a reminder of a time when Australia’s connections to the rest of the world ran through its ports with cargo carried by grand ships. Gregory began a family legacy of painting Australian maritime scenes that, through his two sons, lasted nearly a hundred years. The National Library of Australia holds a number of works by the Gregory family, who were able to make a living from their art by cleverly catering to wealthy colonists and proud mariners who desired portraits of their pride and joy—their ships. Find out more about the Gregory family and its art in the article on page 2.
