Profiles
: Australian Women Scientists
Ragbir
Bhathal
Here are
sixteen tales of scientific discovery. In their own words, Australian
women scientists tell the stories of their lives, their work and the secrets
of their success. Until now, their world-famous achievements have not
been widely known in their own country. In this remarkable book all talk
candidly about their careers, describing not just the obstacles that many
encountered--personal, social and institutionalised discrimination--but
also their inspirations and influences.
Passion,
curiosity and the quest for knowledge characterise the experiences of
every one of these remarkable women, each with a very different story
to tell. From microbiology to the revolutionary vanadium redox battery
to the greenhouse effect, the work of these scientists in some way touches
the lives of all Australians.
Based on
interviews from the National Library of Australia's Eminent Women in Science
oral history project, this groundbreaking book catalogues the lives and
work of an esteemed group of contemporary Australian women scientists,
giving voice to 16 'quiet achievers'.
