Throughout 2003, the Library continued to encourage Australians to engage with the Collection and the institution through an ongoing program of events, exhibitions, travelling exhibitions, tours, and publications. These initiatives enabled Australians to read for themselves the diaries of artist Donald Friend and schoolgirl Daisy White, to discover the art of Ellis Rowan and some of Australia’s early travel artists and photographers, to hear Australia’s leading writers speak about their work, and to explore the Library on guided tours.

The National Library recognises that the Australian community wants to access the Library’s Collection in many different ways. Some of our users are committed researchers looking to access areas of the Collection in depth. Others may be university or high school students, focused on a specific topic and a deadline. Still others will want to have the Collection interpreted for them. And all will be located across Australia, in large and small communities. For the National Library of Australia, the diversity of our users means new opportunities—and new challenges—to make our Collection and our services accessible.
