Comments received on the new website

Since the first version was launched in 1995, the National Library’s website has become our primary means of service delivery. In December 2003, the Library launched its new website. Completely restructured, it addresses many of the access issues identified in testing earlier versions. A key element of the restructure has been the replacement of the library management system that underpins the Library catalogue of 3 million records, enabling the Library to offer improved online search facilities. The new website offers a flatter structure—fewer ‘clicks’ are needed to find things—and content has been reviewed to reduce the use of ‘library terminology’, making the site more accessible for all users.

On the new Library website, users can:

  • Search the Library’s catalogue and website through the ‘one search’ facility
  • View search results, including an image of each item if it has been digitised
  • Easily download search results to their own computers or send them in an email message
  • Request and reserve material from home
  • Access databases and other online resources
  • Access Copies Direct, the fee-based document delivery service provided by the Library direct to all users
  • Explore new ‘find’ pages that focus on what items users want to find rather than the tools needed to find them
  • Sign up to receive the Library’s monthly email newsletter
  • Shop for Library publications and merchandise with improved online shopping facilities.
