Treasures Gallery
In 2009 the National Library will begin construction of its Treasures Gallery and a new Exhibition Gallery. These state of the art display spaces will be the realisation of years of research, planning work and fundraising, and should be open to members of the public later the following year.
The Treasures Gallery will give all Australians and overseas visitors the unique experience of seeing the Library’s greatest treasures and will powerfully demonstrate Australian history and culture. Items on display will range from the remarkable and unexpected to the rare and the priceless. The handwritten Endeavour journal of James Cook, Eddie Mabo’s diary and manuscript maps, the original words and music for Waltzing Matilda, the watercolour art and maps of the First Fleet, a page from the Gutenberg bible, Jorn Utzon’s preliminary model for the shells of the future Sydney Opera House, Tim Winton’s original manuscript for Cloudstreet, and much, much more will be available to the public for viewing in a specially designed gallery incorporating the highest possible standards of display, interpretation, new technology and preservation.
Over $3 million has been generously donated to the Treasures Gallery already. If you also would like to donate towards the Treasures Gallery fund, please download and complete our Treasures Gallery donation form
