Cataloguing a serious topic in a fun format
8 July 2011
Sitting on my desk at the moment is a zine titled “a DIY guide to radical cheerleading” by the Friends of the Earth Adelaide Radical Cheerleader Squad. It is something I’m cataloguing as it is part of the Henderson collection. It’s a simply made zine but to me it represents much of what zines are all about. It’s a serious topic presented in a fun way and also (I think) a gentle reminder that social protest doesn’t have to be violent or destructive. Also radical cheerleading sounds fun, though not easy to find a subject heading for. Especially when it's about cheerleading for a more locally produced and sustainable food supply. Subject cataloguing can be something of an art and often open to interpretation, which is what can make it fun and frustrating at the same time.
