Unique and Unspoilt
23 February 2011
Unique and Unspoilt: A Year Among the Natural Wonders of Heard Island is based on the journals of John Béchervaise during his 13 months in charge of an Australian scientific base on Heard Island. His journals document the beauty of the isolated island, the tyranny of its harsh climate, and the daily struggle of the handful of men charged with running a scientific base.
Bernadette Hince is a researcher, historian and dictionary-writer with an interest in Antarctica and the Arctic. She was awarded the Harold White Fellowship by the National Library to research the diaries of John Béchervaise.
