Make your mark and Re-Picture Australia, an online project
Online at www.pictureaustralia.org
Picture Australia is calling on all image-makers to creatively re-use, re-interpret and Re-Picture Australia’s national collections. You are encouraged to ‘mash-up’ public-domain images into new artworks by sampling these historical images, incorporating your own illustrations and photographs to create new montages and meanings. Completed works can then be loaded into the Re-Picture Australia Flickr group. The Re-Picture Australia project aims to encourage the creative use of the nation’s collections and to attract new audiences playing and working in the visual industries. Associated events include a multimedia display at the National Library of Australia during the Vivid National Photography Festival.
For more information on accessing images, or licensing, adding and describing your own works, please visit the Picture Australia web site, www.pictureaustralia.org

Photographic Narratives: Their Meaning, Development and Craft. A seminar presented by Edward Stokes
National Library of Australia, Parkes Place, Canberra
"Narratives can make us understand. Photographs do something more: they haunt us." (Susan Sontag)
How can photographs be woven together to create historical or social narratives, with their images and texts creating integrated stories? And how, through developing such narratives, can the deeper meanings of individual photographs be amplified? This seminar will address the 'whys' and 'hows' of crafting memorable photographic narratives. It is presented by Edward Stokes, a photographer, writer and publisher. His photographic narrative books include Hedda Morrison’s Hong Kong 1946 – 47, a recent work drawing on some remarkable postwar photographs (www.heddamorrison.com). The aim of the presentation is to inspire practitioners and newcomers with the value, interest and satisfaction in creating photographic narratives – and publishing them in books, websites and other media.

Screening at the National Film and Sound Archive: 'I'm No Angel'
National Film and Sound Archive, McCoy Circuit, Acton, Canberra
Dir: Wesley Ruggles, USA, 1933, 87 mins, 35mm, b&w, Eng. (unclassified 15+)
Mae West’s first film in a surprisingly small (at least in filmography) body of work was a straight but by no means straight-laced re-creation of her notorious stage show. But West ain’t no ingénue: it’s got all the Pre-Code innuendo and Cary Grant a girl could want. And as star and scriptwriter it’s that rare occasion when a woman was very much in charge of a classic Hollywood feature.
See the legendary Mae West in a classic film still from I'm no Angel at the NFSA's new exhibition, Shooting Stars - Women from the Taussig Collection.

Two lovers are doomed by a tribal edict decreeing that the girl is "tabu" to all men. 'Picture Paradise' at the NGA: Asia-Pacific Film Series. Legong: Dance of the Virgins
(Director: Henry de la Falaise. Bali. 1935. 65 minutes. Two-colour Technicolour)
National Gallery of Australia: James O Fairfax Theatre, Parkes Place, Canberra
Legong: Dance of the Virgins, filmed entirely on location in Bali in 1935, is a tragic tale of love denied. Poutou, a young girl who is a respected Legong dancer in her community falls in love with the young musician Nyoung. Her father is delighted with Poutou's choice and wants to help her to conquer Nyoung's heart. But Poutou's half sister Saplak wants Nyoungis also and when he chooses Saplak, Poutou drowns herself. Legong's real theme though is much more than melodrama: It is the delineation of Balinese culture. Henry de la Falaise captured religious rituals including frenetic dances and mystical parades, everyday dealings at the local marketplace, a cockfight (which was cut out of the British version) and, in the final scene, a mass cremation.

Hanging day and opening event for Galeria Bezdomna (Homeless Gallery)
ACT Australian Historical Railway Museum, Geijera Place (at the end of Cunningham Street) Kingston, Canberra
The 66th edition of Galeria Bezdomna - Canberra's first Homeless Gallery - will be held in two railway carriages at the ACT Australian Historical Railway Museum. All are welcome to hang their photographs, but given that space is limited we suggest you get in early on hanging day and restrict works to a reasonable size. Registration will commence at 9am Saturday 6 September, and close at 4pm or when all of the available space is taken. Works cannot be removed from the Gallery during the exhibition, but must be taken down between 4 - 6pm on Sunday 14 September. There are restrictions on the methods that can be used to hang prints as carriages are lined with laminate, so no pins, nails or screws are allowed. There are some fixing points where it may be possible to string a wire on which to clip prints. In most cases, blu tac or 3M command strips are probably the best method of fixing prints to the carriage walls, windows, and ceiling. An exhibition opening will be held from 4 to 6pm on hanging day. Please BYO guests and catering.
Hanging: 9am - 4pm. Opening event: 4pm - 6pm. Free event. Open to the public.
