Archiving Web Resources - Issues for cultural heritage organisations International Conference
National Library of Australia, Canberra 9 - 11 November 2004

About the conference

The conference will provide the opportunity for colleagues from around the world to share their experiences and to identify issues that would benefit from discussion or collaborative action at the international level. While many issues are already known and are the subject of research projects around the world, the conference will aim to identify those of particular significance to cultural heritage organisations that accept responsibility for extending their collecting and access roles to Web resources. While there will be an emphasis on the experiences of the national libraries sector, the issues involved are relevant to the wider cultural heritage sector. Many issues challenge traditional professional practices and approaches, and are not always technical. They concern the role of cultural heritage institutions in the digital age and the policy decisions needed to determine how that role is carried out.

The conference is the first of its kind to be held in Australia. It aims to bring together practitioners and decision makers from key institutions around the world to address issues of mutual concern at the strategic level.

Speakers have been invited to participate in the conference. They are leaders in their field and represent a range of activities in the cultural heritage sector.

The conference forms part of the National Library of Australia's contribution to the work program of the IFLA CDNL Alliance Bibliographic Standards (ICABS).

Who should attend?

The conference would be of interest to a broad range of people with interest in the use of the Internet for the dissemination of information, including creators, publishers, researchers, government policy makers and employees of cultural hertiage institutions and related organisations. As the focus is strategic rather than technical, it is not necessary to have experience or detailed understanding of web archiving and digital technology.

We expect that the conference will be popular so register early as the Library's facilities can only accommodate 300 people.

Information Day

An informal Information Day that focuses in more detail on specific methodologies and systems associated with web archiving and access will be held after the conference on Friday 12 November. It will provide the opportunity for institutions to showcase new developments and practical responses to specific issues and to share information with colleagues. The workshop would be of interest to experienced practitioners as well as to those wishing to learn more about web archiving options.

Separate registration is required for attendance at the Information Day.

Poster sessions will also be held throughout the conference with the aim of showcasing as many projects and practices from around the world as possible.
